gimp text and utf characters

I have a some text: "AERIAL" in a gimp file that I created in Slackware 14.0 with gimp 2.8.2. When I open the file in Slackware64 14.1 with gimp 2.8.6 and try to edit the text (change colors), gimp converts the AE to Ĉ (the ash character where the A and E are combined into one letter). I want to keep my original spelling (6 characters) not the one gimp forces on me (5 characters). My LANG env variable is set to "en_US".

How do I keep the original spelling?

Already tried that. As soon as I switch to the font I want, the letters get changed.
