if you are compiling the kernel by yourself, probably it's better to use Pat's config file as the base, but if you want to use Slack's packages, please be sure to make an initrd file before you reboot your system, or else you will have a kernel panic saying that it can't mount your root partition.

just write this code to create an initrd for kernel 2.6.15.5 and have a ext3 as your primary filesystem and replace hdaX with your root partition location :

Code:
mkinitrd -c 2.6.15.5 -m jdb:ext3 -f ext3 -r /dev/hdaX
Quote:
I'd like to clear something up if possible since we're on the topic of kernels. When I downloaded the 2.6 kernel I had a choice between 2.6.15 and 2.6.15.x where x varied from 1 to 6. What is the difference?
the latest digit indicates an update to the 2.6.x kernel, which is now called the -stable team, which Chris Wright is the maintainer. Usually it consist of security updates to make the kernel even more stable

Thanks guys! I'm using a laptop with a synaptics touchpad that was already working (but only basically, no scrolling) and I was trying to get my Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical USB mouse to work as well. I added another "InputDevice" section like Simon Bridge displayed so that I have:
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier "Mouse1"
	Driver "mouse"
	Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier "Mouse2"
	Driver "mouse"
	Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
	Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
	Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
	Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
EndSection
In my ServerLayout section, I have:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier "Simple Layout"
	Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]" 0 0
	InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"
	InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"
	InputDevice "Mouse2" "SendCoreEvents"
EndSection
I actually used xorgcfg in the terminal to have it do the ServerLayout section for me (by "enabling" mouse that was produced by the new "InputDevice" code).

Thanks for the tips guys. Next I'll try to get the full features of my synaptics working.
