Getting started with Wine

Hi,

I need some pointers to learn about Wine. Is there any good tutorials for using Wine?

Thanks.

Head over to www.winehq.org and have a look at the FAQs. I've seen better tutorials but I've also seen worse. It's wise to use the most up-to-date package available for your distro.

The best way to use wine is to use windows apps the way you expect. If the app doesn't work as expected, file bug reports at winehq.org. If you rely on tricks or howtos to get apps to work, they are either bad or quickly outdated.

So install away and have fun!

Sometimes when a program fails you get an error message about a .dll not working. In winecfg you can set certain dlls for applications to be native or built-in. Try setting to one or the other. If you need a dll most can be downloaded from a few websites - doing a quick google on the dll name usually shows where.

Since you are using Slackware you may be interested in the build script for wine at http://slackbuilds.org/repository/12.0/system/wine/.

I use the script to install/update to a new version of wine. Just be sure if you are upgrading your wine installation that you also update your wine configuration directory using wineprefixcreate.
