I think you'll find the answer in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
Code:
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:5:0:1) found
(EE) fglrx(0): Chipset 0x7249 is not recognized
(EE) fglrx(0): PreInitConfig failed
SetVBEMode failed
(EE) fglrx(0): R200PreInit failed
I guess it means your video card is not supported by that driver.
Look at the thread in my sig about 3d acceleration. At the end, there are some posts about ATI. See if anything that Old_Fogie did helps

right thanks ill have a look
EDIT
hmm no dont see anything which helps really, Old_Fogie main problem was he did have tmpfs for the radeon card to use.
ive got all the the right kernel options compiled and the wrong ones turned off!
went over to the gentoo ati wiki to check that.
i will update xorg and see if that helps.

ATI has a ...... 'reputation' in the Linux community for their lackluster (at best) support for Linux...
What is the best solution? Get a NVidia card. Support/driver installation is GREAT.

but i just spent £414.98 on getting a that new ATi card............not an option at the moment.
although i guess
3480 frames in 5.0 seconds = 696.000 FPS
3600 frames in 5.0 seconds = 720.000 FPS
isnt bad for having no video acceleration
