Getting from WinXP to Linux

I just recently used partition magic on my hard drive. Unfortunatly I had to fdisk /MBR to get windows back up. Since I have a laptop with no floppy and I gave away my Slack Cd's to a friend, I can't get back into linux (it's horrible).

I Tried Loadlin but it keeps on giving me "Not in real DOS mode" or "need more memory".

Is there any way to get back to Slack without a floppy or the install CD's?

Thanks!

Try installing a 3rd party bootloader. I'm sorry, but I don't know any examples for one..

if you have the ability to burn cd's, then either burn the appropriate slackware cd or knoppix or another live-cd. alternatively, i did a www.google.com/linux search on "windows bootloader" and found a link that looks helpful: http://www.linuxsolved.com/forums/ftopic125.html

good luck!

Slw after XP

If u used Partition Magic 8 then u should have Boot Magic which will boot XP and Linux. Otherwise use cd1(SLW) as boot disk to boot linux root partion and later have lilo installed to mbr and thus boot XP or Linux. Grub(to mbr) will do as well.
The latter would be safer. Boot Magic can be twitchy. Good luck.

If bandwidth is an issue and you can't redownload the first slack cd, grab the minimal Gentoo LiveCD... It's only 60 Mb. I use that for all my rescue needs. You can even get on-line with it. Just mount your slack partition, chroot and then reinstall grub or lilo. Takes about 1 minute. If you have lilo installed, you can also make your own bootable CD as compared to a boot floppy. I forget the command and I'm at work in Windows at the moment... :-) I think it's:

mkrescue --iso

something.. Check /var/log/packages/lilo-* in one of the bin directories. It's one of those binaries that comes with lilo. And I'm positive it's the switch of --iso. That will give you an ISO to burn to CD. Works just like a boot floppy only 100 times faster.

I beleive it is possible to save a bootloader onto a flash memory stick or floppy.
Here is a useful set of documentation. If you happen to have cygwin installed, you should be able to work everything from inside of cygwin.

How do you do this? I'm facing the same problem and am not sure what to put at the boot prompt. Also, is it ok to use CD of Slack 10.2 even if I have 10.1 still on my machine?

Thanks in advance.

Boot from your cd and write

bare.i root=/dev/hda3 noinitrd

at yout boot prompt.

You should replace bare.i with your kernel of choice and hda3 with your correct root partition.
