Get flashing screen when leaving X with Slackware 13 on Toshiba laptop

I'm running Slackware 13 on a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop. I use startx to boot up xfce when I want a graphical desktop, but when I log out of X, the screen begins flashing and a line of what looks like scrolling malformed text appears on the top line of the screen. This seems to freeze it during shutdown. I've also tried it with KDE and KDM in runlevel 4, same thing. It also happens when switching consoles with CTRL+ALT+F[123...].

If it occurs during a console switch, I can switch back with CTRL+ALT+F7, at which point the problem goes away and I can log off normally.

If I startx as root there is no problem, but this is a worse solution than the console switch above. I've reinstalled twice now, but it does not seem to help.

Thanks for your help, and I'll add additional details as requested or as I think of them.

This is /var/log/Xorg.0.log after a switch to virtual console 2 and back to F7:

Hello Mogr, welcome to LQ.

Looks like a (maybe problematic) switch between framebuffer / other driver for your graphics card.

Please provide output of "lspci -k|grep -A 3 VGA" as well as relevant part of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if it exists).

Anything interesting in /var/log/syslog about drm and/or fb drivers ?

Thanks for the welcome!

I do have an xorg.config: I made it to see if it helped, but its not very interesting, all default stuff. Still, I'll make some guesses.

There are lots of these, going back to Dec 1. This is the most recent. They come in two's like that: I'm guessing it prints that every time I do the terminal switch. Nothing from the fb driver.

Thanks again!

I think you didn't type exactly that :

lspci -k|grep -B 3 VGA

This command should indicate driver and modules for your graphic card.

For instance here:
Code:
bash-3.1$ lspci -k|grep -A 3 VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M (rev a1)
        Subsystem: Lenovo ThinkPad T61
        Kernel driver in use: nouveau
        Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidiafb
bash-3.1$

The Xorg.0.log shows that is an Intel GM45 using the Intel 2.8.0 driver.
Quote:
(II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset,
...
(II) intel(0): Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset
I suspect that a kernel update (to 2.6.31.4 or later) and a driver update (to 2.9.0 or later) is required.

With lspci -k | grep -B 3 VGA:

Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device ff50
Kernel driver in use: agpgart-intel
Kernel modules: intel-agp
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Kernel and driver updates? How do I find those and do that with Slackware?

There are known problems with Intel X video driver version 2.8.0 for some graphics cards.

For that reason you'll find other versions in the Slackware CD or DVD or in any mirror in following directory:

extra/xf86-video-intel-alternate.

Thus my advise is:

- have at hand all these drivers in some directory
- cd to that directory
- try all these drivers one after the other till (hopefully) you find one which works well with your graphics card.

To try one (this is an example) type as root:
Code:
upgradepkg --reinstall xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-x86_64-1.txz
Then kill X (if it was running), start it (again) and see what you get.

If you are not satisfied with the result, try another one and so on.

Please let us know the results.

Nothing doing with the alternate drivers. The CD had 2.5.1, 2.6.3, 2.7.1, and 2.8.1. All of them still gave me the flashing screen. I'll try the kernel upgrade next, I suppose.

Wow. I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.32... and not only did it work the first time without breaking anything obvious, it also seems to have fixed my flashing screen problem. I can switch terminals no problem, and logging out's okay. I think it's fixed.

Hearty congratulations on achieving this. It is said that you are not a true Linux user until you have compiled your own kernel! Glad that you got it working.
