Hi, I have noticed a number of gtk applications now use a stupid gear menu to access functions.
Personally, I hate it and like the old File, Edit and Help menus because its far easier to use with the keyboard.
I know it' not a Slackware related problem, but does anyone know if there is a way to toggle the old style back or am I stuck using older versions of applications for ever?
It's a new pop up menu that is in gtk+3, unfortunately there is no way to make it into a regular menu. There are still regular menus in gtk+3 if the developer wants to use them, but if the developer decides to use this pop up menu, there is not way to convert it to a regular menu.
Keyboarding with this is hard, but it looks like the idiots at gnome have finally figured it out, and it looks like in some future unspecified version of gtk+3, you will be able to use f10 to open the pop up menu. Unfortunately it seems that they also plan to remove mnemonics in the future, so this will make keyboarding suck.
You can contact developers and let them know your problems, some apps that went to gtk+3, like audacious, have decided to go back to gtk+2 and then on to qt, because gtk+3 is such a piece of garbage
I use a couple of programs that use this crazy new fad. Evince and Catfish, I get around that at the moment by using a couple of point releases behind.
I guess I'll have to edit the source code and compile with the old way.
Not sure how much more I'll have to learn to get it done, my mundane programming skills are scratchy at best.
Hey I did a bit more searching to see when it would be implemented in gtk, and it seems that each application needs to setup the hotkey, so there will never be a gtk setting for the gear menu hotkey.
I found a bug report for Evince as having fixed its lack of F10 for the gear menu around version 3.8
The latest slackbuild for slackware 14.1 is 3.12, and the f10 works for me with the gear menu
I tried catfish's latest version but still no luck, so maybe file a bug with catfish devs to implement this, as it is stupidly designed to be set in each application.
There still seems to be a keyboard issue with Evince, as there is the wrench button menu that seems to have the old view menu, and there doesn't seem to be any keyboard shortcut for that.
All and all, really stupid design choices by gnome devs.
