gdm in slackware

I have used slackware since version 7 and I have NEVER been able to get gdm to work right. here it is. I can load gdm just perfectly, but it can not find the wmanager that I select, not even gnome. If I edit the gdmconfig to add the FULL path to each wmanager then it will load the manager, but then I can not load any program after that... not even xterm. If I log in to gnome with startx then I can work perfectly. Also all managers work... blackbox, fluxbox, kde, wm, icewm... all are find.. and kdm works fine. But I really want to use gdm. does any one have any Ideas... I can not find any info on whether or not gdm needs its own user and/or enviroment paths.

thanks in advance.

xinitrc

oh... sorry my mistake... it was the /etc/X11/gdm/Xsession file that I changed not the gdm.conf... and yes I have a /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file... though it is a link file to a file in the same directory of xinitrc.blackbox that would not matter would... in other words does the default system xmanager need to be gdm or even gnome in order for it to work?
