Gaim and libao problem

Hello all,

I recently installed Slackware and I haven't touched it in a while (been too busy to learn it), but now I am trying to get to know it more sinceI have more time.

One of the first things I tried was to install Gaim. The package installed fine but Gaim will not run because it says i don't have the libao package. Does anyone know what this is and where I can get it? And also, if I install that package will Gaim just work then or do I have to re-install Gaim too?

Thanks everyone!

Heck, I don't know.

Is ogg vorbis a pre-requisite for gaim?

Or, does ogg vorbis simply also include the libao package?

Pleading ignorance here. (But, of coure, that can be fixed.)

Regards...

ogg vorbis includes libao, so I assume gaim requires ogg. also i prefere the official packages, as linuxpackages.net insist all of their packagers dump everything in /usr, not /usr/local

1. ogg vorbis is an audio encoding scheme.
2. gaim is an instant messaging program.

Gaim does not require ogg to operate... that would be like saying your stereo has to be on for your telephone to work.

libao is an audio output library. Gaim supports the playing of sounds via libao. The packages for Gaim are compiled with this sound support. So, if installing Gaim from one of the packages you will need to have libao installed. Otherwise, get the source for Gaim and compile it without sound support.

BTW: I found all this out by plugging the keywords libao and gaim into Google after I ran into the same problem [hint: I always check Google before coming here - I learn more that way]. Also, you can go to the website for the app you are trying to install... http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq.php

Cheers!
Mk.
