full functional mobos that work with slack

I've bought 3 different mobos(asus, abit, and gigabyte), and all of which failed to work with either linux or slackware.

Could anyone with a mobo that supports 266mhz bus and amd athlon xp with slackware post which mobo they're using?

I'm really not in the mood to make another bad selection.

Thanks in advance.

I have yet to find a Gigabyte mobo that Linux doesn't work on, but here are the specs for the mobo on this box:
K7 Triton 400 Series with AGP 8X/FSB333
Model no. is GA-7VAX

Thanks. I've just RMAed 3 boards that wouldn't work. Frustration was becoming too close of a friend.

Asus A7M266 works like a champ. I am wondering what your problems were... Maybe it was just a need for a kernel recompile? I just can't see 3 seperate boards not working? That's more than simple bad luck ;)

Cool

MSI K7T266 Pro (Info)
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.5GHz (I know it's not an AthlonXP, but what the heck)

Working well... even with the onboard sound and additional USB brackets (came bundled with the board).

:Pengy:

i agree with MasterC. snocked: would you mind telling us exactly
what did not work? which messages did you get?

I've been keen on using slack, but for slackware (8.1 and 9), the initial reboot right after install on my ABIT AT7s would result in no POST (no beeps) and no display; however, other distros and Windows work perfectly. I used same install discs on my friend's pc to make sure they worked and sure enough they did.

I used a Abit SD7-533 for over a year with Slackware. The only thing I didn't like was that it didn't come with a base for the heatsink. I had to call Taiwan to get one.
I am currently running Slackware 8.1 on an Aopen ax4b(specially configured for winxp):D

Cool

Isn't that a dual processor mobo?

I had the A7N266, but there were no CMOS pins on the board. Instead you clear the CMOS by shorting two solder points on the board.

Nah, the A7M266 was the very first DDR board (anywhere AFAIK, but from ASUS for sure) and is still one of the best available. It's a single Socket A board, with 2 memory banks, onboard ata133 controller (Promise), AMD 761 Chipset. Great board IMO.

Cool

FWIW, I'm considering getting a Shuttle AK32-A, with the VIA KT266A chipset. I plan on using it with an Athlon XP1800+. I decided to ask on the hardware forum before buying it, and got a thumbs up from a member there.

I bought the gigabyte GA-7VAX. Please pm me when you get the board up and running. I'd like an update on your situation.

Something that might help...

I don't know how the jumpers on your hard disk are set... most likely if you plug it in directly the jumper settings will be for CABLE SELECT.

You might want to try set it to MASTER or SLAVE accordingly. I've heard of such issues with many distros such as Red Hat and Mandrake.

I've read that as well, but didn't work.

Go with the cheapo ECS k7s5a pro (usb2.0) mobo...

It's really good in my experience.

Cheers ;)
