fubar USB II DAC location?

I have a Fubar II USB DAC which works fine, but sometimes my slackware 12.1 does not recognize it. I know that this external sound device is located at /dev/-dsp1 , but when I try to set the KDE sound control to default to this location, it says "no such device". Trying ALSA, I don't see a clear way of setting the default sound device to this external USB DAC. [alsactl does not seem to have a way of doing this--or am I missing something?]

As things stand now, sometimes my system recognizes the DAC; sometimes not.

Other particulars: IBM Thinkpad T30 , I use the USB DAC to output sound to my stereo system.

Thanks for any advice you might have.

Running `alsaconf` as root might allow you to select the device. You may also wish to read the /usr/src/linux-2.6.24.5/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt file (specifically the "Module Autoloading Support" section). After selecting the device in alsaconf, run `alsamixer`, set the volumes, and then run `alsactl store` as root.
