ftp server high cpu load
 

im running ncftpd and when transfering a 100mb file to the ftp server the cpu usage skyrockets to %100 throughout the entire transaction, and returning to normal when finished. the ftp server is a p4 2.4 with 512 mb ram, running slackware 9.1... any ideas as to why just a single transfer would cripple the system.

Wild guess ...

IDE or your eth0 aren't using DMA
but have the CPU shovel every byte?

What happens if you transfer stuff
the other way? Or copy big files around
on the local filesystem?

If all this is not the case, use proftpd ;)
and see what happens.
