Qmail works.
Check Shilo's "How I do it all" sticky at the top of this forum to setup a FTP server
Or visit his homepage at www.shilo.is-a-geek.com/slack

sshd would probably be better, imo. you could configure ftp to do what you want, but i wouldn't run an ftp server that has access to the entire system. if by "anything on your box" you just mean anything that you specify in certain directories (media files, etc.), ftp would be okay. but for "anything" meaning ANYTHING, i would say no, go with ssh/scp (secure shell/secure copy).
to do that, install openssh if it's not installed, configure/setup keys, etc. (read doc/google), configure firewall if you have one, and run the daemon. you'll then have access to anything a regular user logging on would have, and if they have root privileges, they'll be able to access anything.

you could do that, but then to have any useful access to the filesystem, you'd have to enable root login over ftp. *not* a good idea.

aight.. what im looking for is the easiest and safest way to FTP to my Slackware box. All I want to do is be able to transfer pages that I work on from my main computer and allow my friend to upload pictures to the site so that I can add them to the site.

in that case, cereal is right that proftpd would be a good choice.
