I just installed slackware 10 on a pentium3 compaq 5000 desktop, I have a cdrom drive and cdwriter drive. the cdwriter works fine, but the cdrom does not. I read some of the other posts, but I cannot seem to figure out the problem. In my my /dev directory, I saw that cdrom is linked to hdd, but I could not find any other cdroms. any help would be great.

If youre other cdrom is hde, then add an entry in your fstab that looks like this:
Then you will need to create the directory cdrom2 under the /mnt directory.

Thanks for the quick reply, but I need a little more help on finding out what my other cdrom is? is there something else I need to post, system messages or something?

DId you try it to see if it was hde? If not, try hdc and see if thats it.

What is your output for ls /proc/ide ?

I never knew that directory existed. I knew there had to be some way to list the IDE devices but I never knew where to look. I just always used trial and error, or watched for what devices were identified as hd whatever whenever I boot up.

Browse this directory, its subdirectories, cat media, cat driver, cat model and you will know all ide devices of your system

i tried hde, hdc, but it is not working, do i need to create a device in the dev directory?
also when I put /mnt/cdrom2 in my fstab, it shows up as cdrom3 in my file browser, does that make a difference?

Change your fstab as suggested above
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0

And ls -l /dev/hdd to see if it owned by root and the disk group or the cdrom group.
Anyway you should add your user to both cdrom and disk groups in /etc/group

I tried to modify my fstab again, but it didnt work, when I did the second comand you asked, cdrom,cdrom came up, there was nothing else?

why dont you just look in your dmesg for the cdrom's /dev/ id?

the cdwriter, which is hdd works fine, when i try to mount the cdrom i get the message
mount: special device /dev/hdc does not exist

yes it doesnt exist, it isnt in your /dev/ directory you pasted to us.

you probly just need to make /dev/hdc
