Fresh Install / MySQL Issue

I'm setting up an unused computer as a webserver, so I ended up installing Slackware 13.1. I have SSH, Apache, PHP, and MySQL set up so far, but I'm having a little issue with MySQL. Quite frankly I'm only vaguely familar with basic linux commands, and not familiar at all with how it operates. I do know that I can connect locally through the socket on the same computer, but I have no success connecting through TCP/IP.

I have it set to listen on port 3306, but 'netstat -ln' never shows it listening (but there are things listening on ports 37, 113, and 22).

I've seen mention of 'iptables' so I just set everything to ACCEPT by default.

I made sure in my.cnf I left 'skip-networking' commented out, and that I specified both 'bind-address' ( and 'port' (3306) under [mysqld].

I've restarted /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld multiple times since all of this was set.

Did I manage to mess something up in the install, or is there something else I can check?

Just to make sure because anybody else trying to help you will ask...

Did you set up the initial MySQL database as the comments in /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld suggest?

Additionally, that start-up script on 13.1 has a separate environment variable that you have to comment out if you want it to attach to the network.

as root set up initial database:
mysql_install_db --user=mysql

comment out SKIP variable in /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld
# SKIP="--skip-networking"

[re]start the server:
sh /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld restart

secure the installation (read man page):

If this does not solve your problem, please post any messages you see when starting up the MySQL server.

yeah I followed all the directions it gave me to install, except it never said to comment out the skip networking in rc.mysqld (probably because this is new, or specific to slackware 13.1)

gosh, I didn't even know the rc files were readable code, but removing that (commenting it out) fixed my problem, thanks =) now it's listening intently on 3306 and waiting for some administration!

grumble grumble... it's always the little things, lol
