freezing

i have slack 10.1 2.4.25 kernel. on a machine with a p2 @233mhz, but as i am workong away, it will freeze. even in screensaver. but not in the prompt mode. i have kde 3.3 running. i think my 3 options are
1. increase fsb to up the processor. (worked in windows)
2. change the kernel to 2.6.XX
3. run a different desktop than kde
4. all of the above.

I think slack 10.1 comes with 2.4.29 kernel. Did you downgrade the kernel?
Why?

ALSo, does this freeze for a moment and then works again or does it freeze completely?

sometimes it freeses and comes back again, then at another time it competly freezes. then when i boot again hda1 has errors so i have to put in another recovery cd and run e2fsck. then i boot again and i get in.

ps. i will come back with what kernel i have. it is the 2.4.29

also whould it help to update it up to 2.4.31?

First of all, the next time it freezes and comes back post the last 20 lines of
/var/log/messages. and also type "free" to see your memory utilization. It will help a lot.

I had a freezing problem in slack 10 and I managed to solve it:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...eezing+problem
but I don't know if this is the case. There could be a thousand reasons (like a buggy driver causing a hardware failure) that may create this problem.

a p2 @233mhz is a slow machine for KDE. How much RAM do you have?

seems to be related to hardware, could beMother Board or harddisk or RAM, i might be wrong. Is this old PC?

384 mb ram, 512 kb cache. maybe it it the vid card. i know this works for testing a mobo, but what about a minimal boot? mobo, hdd, cdrom, vid card.

and give me a little bit and ill be back with the log.

do you have a pci express video card ( don't think so...) ?
if not, try to add "pciehp" and "shpchp" to the file /etc/hotplug/blacklist.

Maybe egag is right. I don't use hotplug at all. I want to have full controll on my system.
On the other hand why would this cause problems only in X mode. Maybe one of those modules you don't need and are loaded by hotplug conflicts with your graphic card module....I don't know.

for now : #/etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug stop
and to stay off after a reboot : #chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug
