framebuffer console problem

Hi!

I`ve noticed that installing Slack on different machines (vga integrated) gives
different results with screen resolution - framebuffer console. I mean there are cases
when linux runs only with normal VGA consol by default after installing a fresh copy of
slack, also there are cases when it runs with 1024x768x32k.
What is the reason of it??!!
is it possible to run 1024x768x32k on all machines or it depends on pc hardware configuration and monitor?
Is it possible to solve somehow this problem?

P.S. Same problem as in this thread

That is most likely down to lilo. Check your /etc/lilo.conf:

Code:
# Normal VGA console
# vga = normal
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k
# vga=791
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x32k
# vga=790
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga=773
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x64k
# vga=788
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x32k
# vga=787
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x256
# vga=771
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x64k
# vga=785
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x32k
# vga=784
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x256
# vga=769
Uncomment the vga= line that you would like to use, then run lilo as root. Don't know why it should change automatically from install to install tho

With lilo there is no problem, I`ve already did this way...
The problem is - driver, monitor or whatever...

As I remember you can pass options to lilo at boot so you can try pass 1024x768x32 and see if it works without errors.

That's beyond my technical knowledge but I could hazard a guess that, like you said, there is some default properties of vid card/monitor that affect it. If that is true then you would also expect to see the same resolutions during boot up, in the post tests or when the bios is detecting devices etc.
