formatting DVDs before burning
Is it necessary to format DVDs prior to burning them and, if so, what is the command that accomplishes that? Thanks for any help!

I believe the *only* time you need to do this is if you are going to use your DVD-RW as a packet writing device, which basically means almost like an external hard drive. However im guessing you just want to burn movies in which case no, you dont need to do any preperation. Just burn and go.

Agreed - I'll assume you are talking about DVD+R or DVD-R blanks, and neither of those require any sort of initial formatting. Fire at will -- J.W.

Actually what I'm doing is backing up data from a hard drive (while DVD isn't the ultimate backup media it serves the purpose for now). Does this change anything and is it necessary to create an image with mkisofs?

No, it doesn't change anything. Just create the image file first (using mkisofs), then burn it from the hard drive to the DVD. As I indicated, the blank DVD will not need any prep work or initialization. Burn away! -- J.W.

SiegeX and J.W.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply. I thinki I've got enough to go on now, though I'll post again if I get stuck. Thanks again!
