The permissions on xlock appear to be what you said (or what I understood, anyway):
in your /etc/group file, your username should be in shadow line.

you should create a different password just for your xlock, which is different from your normal shell login password.
Code:
#openssl passwd > $HOME/.xlockrc
I prefer xlock it's light load and not running as a daemon.

Thank you number22. I added my username to the shadow group and created a hashed password different from my normal login password in .xlockrc using openssl passwd. xlock doesn't recognize it, though. It still wants my normal shell login password.

This is probably because it is paying attention to the keycode, not the letter. If you wanted it to support the uppercase L, you'd probably need to add in a "shift" in your file.

Code:
Control Mod1 Shift L :ExecCommand xscreensaver-command -lock
It probably allows either uppercase or lowercase letters in the config file to ensure readability (I or l can look very similar depending on your font selection).

That makes sense. Thank you. I'll check it out later when I get home.
