Fluxbox on Slackware
1 Attachment(s)
I would like to get fluxbox configured on my Slackware 14.1 install.
I was reading this. http://www.slackwiki.com/Fluxbox_Newbie This is 5 years old though and probably not very relevant today. However since fluxbox is included, I decided to try and upgrade it, but this doesn't seem to work. Do I need to re-install fluxbox from source? See screenshot. |
Slackware comes with fluxbox and 14.2 has the latest (1.3.7). It is in xap set on the install cd/dvd.
But if you want to upgrade it on 14.1, just get the source of 1.3.7 and execute the bulid script. I did that before going to 14.2 and it worked fine John |
Fluxbox is mature software, and doesn't change much in any readily visible way. There is next to no difference between 1.35, which presumably you have with Slackware 14.1, and 1.37 which is the current version with Slackware 14.2. There is no need to upgrade fluxbox separately and prior to upgrading the rest of your system to Slackware 14.2, if you were to decide to upgrade your entire system. And if you did decide to upgrade fluxbox separately, by, say, installing the package from Slackware 14.2, or recompiling fluxbox 1.37 for your Slackware 14.1 system by downloading the source and slackbuild from the ../source/xap/fluxbox directory in your favorite Slackware-14.2 mirror, you probably couldn't tell the difference between your new package and the older one that came with 14.1
Likewise, the installation and configuration of fluxbox hasn't changed much for a very long time. So the configuration howto you referenced for fluxbox in Slackware is just about as relevant now as when it was composed five years ago. |
Thank you both for the advice.
