fluxbox and the gnome-terminal
Yeah its what i use. And i want a transparent background on my terminal as i've always have had. So in gnome-terminal this is easy just set the settings to transparent, =/ this didn't work on fluxbox. I have no clue why. I could of course use some other terminal but i have no idea how to set transparency in like xterm or rxvt ???
help the n00b ! I just discovered it works when i use one of the original themes, all of them uses a plain color bakground, the bset stuff. but when i use a background image it doesn't work, like i use a theme called sphiroth, and the background doesn't work as it should in the styles file, so i have to specify it in the init file and if i do that everything screws up and am confused and lost. |
Xterm does not support transparency, you can only set a solid color background. Rxvt (I think) supports images for it's backgrounds, but not transparency. Try using aterm (http://aterm.sourceforge.net/) or eterm (www.eterm.org/).

Try man gnome-terminal (not sure if that's the name of the binary, I haven't used Gnome for a while, and never used it much when I had it) to see if there's an option that turns on transparency. With aterm or eterm, you have to specify this option in the fluxbox menu, for example:
aterm -tr Enjoy! --- Cerbere |
It's easy. You only have to dowload an application called fbsetbg from fluxbox.sourceforge.net and use it to set your background image.

OK, I can get it to work in gnome-terminal running enlightenment as my windows manager. But MY problem is that if the terminal is on top of a running application it shows the background instead of the the application THROUGH the transparency. How about that?

if no one minds a little digression, what's the difference between all the terminals? besides their ability to become transparent of course....

Different features and resource consumption. rxvt is lighter than xterm is lighter than most everything else, I think. Some have toolbars, some have tabs, some have scrollbars, some use different keymaps, etc. All I want to do is emulate a terminal so, since I can set '-bg black', I'm happy. (I also set -fg green on my main xterms rather than gray or white just cuz I dig it.) I also admire the light, efficient apps, so I use rxvt. I think a lot of it has to do with codebases, too. Somebody might get the urge to hack an xterm but not want to hack *xterm* so more xterms spring up.

zetox : I think u r facing this problem because the program being used to set the background doesn't support transparency...use something like Esetroot which does.
The command for setting the background would probably be in the 'style' file for the theme u r using. I am using the DEPTHCORE theme which has a line like this in it : rootCommand: Esetroot -stretch ~/.fluxbox/backgrounds/depthcorekernel.jpg darrel.com : Unfortunately for us , I dont think X supports TRUE transparency, like what u described.... I think what all these so called 'transparent' apps...just take a shot of the underlying wallpaper use that as their background or somethin.... :D zetox, I suggest u switch to something like aterm or eterm , they aren't as resource intensive as gnome-terminal and support transparency and tinting and stuff... hope this helps, shreev |
