Flux or Open box

Hi. I was looking for either a fluxbox or an openbox tutorial. The readme always seems to end after installation. Does the Simply Linux Slack 8.1 guide for fluxbox still apply? If anyone knows of the steps I need to take, or where I can find them, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Ok. When I get to the part about modifying my /usr/local/bin/fluxbox file, I open it in pico, but all I can see are characters I can't recognise.
What should I do? The same thing happens if I use joe.

Thanks

The file you are trying to modify is an executable.

You're probably after some configuration files?
Try
cd ~/.fluxbox

and look for menu, keys and init :)

Not working -ahh!

When I do that I get this:
charles@claveybox:~$ cd ~./fluxbox
-bash: cd: ~./fluxbox: No such file or directory

Might it be located somewhere else?

Maybe you'll want to
mkdir .fluxbox
first, and then
cd ~/.fluxbox
cp /usr/local/share/fluxbox/* .
so you don't modify the system defaults :)

Yes, it might be located in ~/.fluxbox instead of ~./fluxbox. I just checked on fluxbox's documentation page and found this:

Quote:
If X11 is started the former way (via startx), the file that is important is called .xinitrc and resides in your home directory. In the case of starting via a display manager, the file is .xsession which resides at the same location.

The next step is to find the executable for Fluxbox. For most people, this is /usr/local/bin/fluxbox. Now you need to edit (or create) the file I just mentioned. Just put the following line at the bottom of the file:

exec /usr/local/bin/fluxbox
I think you're trying to edit the wrong file. It says you need to edit your .xinitrc file or your .xsession file. I am assuming you've got a file called:

/home/cclavey/.xinitrc #notice the period in front of xinitrc

You should then add the line "exec /usr/local/bin/fluxbox" (minus the quotes of course)to that file. If you don't have a /home/cclavey/.xinitrc, you can add this to the system's xinitrc file found here:

/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc #notice there is no period in front of xinitrc

This should get you on your way to having fluxbox load up when "startx" is typed. Hope this helps.

That seems to want to work -- there is a place that says
# Finally, launch XFce window manager
exec <and /usr/local/bin/fluxbox goes here>

Is that correct?

Thanks and Rgds,

That'll be your
~/.xsession
or
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.flux
file ... depending on whether you
want to start flux by default, or
by choice from kdm (gdm)...

Cheers,
Tink
