Floppy and CDRom

hmm... why is it that whenever I need to read my floppy and cdrom, I need to mount them?

I thought they are auto mounted on boot? (fstab?)

Not necessarily. A lot of distributions have an automounter daemon running in the background, but Slackware does not, since mounting filesystems can be a security risk... and is, therefore, one of the privileges of 'root'.

Remember that Slackware tries to be as UNIX-like as possible. This means it requires root to mount floppies and CD-ROMs. This being said, you can also activate the automounter daemon (amd, if I remember well) to provide automounting to the users of your machine.
