flightgear

I downloaded slack 10.1 packages for flightgear, and installed in this order: freeglut>openal>plib>simgear>flightgear program. Then extracted the base program to /usr/share/FlightGear. I can see fgfs in /usr/bin. I didn't see any error message in the install process. Now how does one start this program? Of course, the documentation from flightgear site is no help at this point.

This is how I start flightgear:

/usr/local/FlightGear/bin/fgfs --fg-root=/usr/local/FlightGear/share/FlightGear/data --enable-splash-screen --enable-intro-music --disable-freeze --enable-fuel-freeze --enable-auto-coordination --enable-game-mode --aircraft=737

The first part starts the program. --fg-root points to where the data files are. The rest is just options I use.

The important one is --fg-root, it has to know where to find the data files. I compiled mine from source, so you may have to adjust a bit to match for the slack package and where everything is.

Happy flying!

Thanks mlangdin. Those instructions are starting to make a little sense to me now. However, I'm getting "cannot execute binary file" to /usr/bin/fgfs, even in root. I'm using kde gui.

The packages note they are for "x86_64", and my machine is not 64bit, but I thought there should be no compatibility issues here. Or could there be?

Definitely.
Get the packages for 32 bit.
