Flashplayer 9

Ran into a problem when viewing newer flash content on websites.
Newer flash content is disabled with a message:

"Express install is not supported by this version of Flash Player
To upgrade please visit Flash Player Download Center"

Clicking the link offered the new 9.0.31.0 tar.gz installer.
Downloaded, expanded and ran the installer. Flash plugin
libflashplayer.so installed in the /usr/lib/mozilla-1.7.11/plugin
directory.

Problem is that the newer flash content still exhibits the above
message; plays no content. Also, other flash content continues to
display but right-click puts out the message "About Macromedia
Flash Player 7".

The Mozilla version is 1.0.6, which was part of the Slack 10
distribution, and does not have an About Plugins in the Help
menu. Older plugin was removed before install of the new flash
plugin.

Do I have to upgrade to a newer browser or is there something
else I have failed to do to make this work properly?

Are you using Mozilla or Firefox?

Firefox plugins would go into /usr/lib/Firefox-<version> for global access, or ~/.mozilla/firefox/plugins for user-level access.

Mozilla plugins would be in /usr/lib/Mozilla-<version> for global and ~/.mozilla/plugins for user.

One of these (probably one of the ~ directories) still has the Flash 7 which is overriding the new version. Instead of using the installer, just copy the .so and .xpt files to the ~/.mozilla/plugins or ~/.mozilla/firefox/plugins and remove the ones from the /usr/lib/mozilla... or /usr/lib/firefox...

I think you would be wise to upgrade - either to Firefox or to Seamonkey. Mozilla is an older version and may be incompatible with the newer plugin. It's wise to upgrade anyway as there are a number of security fixes which have come out since that version.

What exhibits the error for others to see if thier flash plugin works?

Type the word ' about:plugins ' on the browser line shows what for flashplayer version.

I feel like an idiot. Sometimes I just become mind numbed.

I blindly followed install instructions not even realizing that I was trying
to install a Firefox plugin in the /usr/lib/mozilla-1.7.11 directory.

Installed in /usr/lib/firefox-1.0.6; everything works fine now.

Please forgive my lapse and thanks for pointing out my oversight.

Glad to see you have it working. I do the same type of things time to time.

You spotted your mistake and posted back. Two acts that a huge number of our posters don't go through. Kudos.
