Flash sound as root, but not user

Yeah, flash sound appears to be working as root in firefox, but not as the user. I know it has something to with permissions, but I have no idea to what the permissions are screwy.

All sound works in user except for flash.

Dear all,
Try changing the KDE control of sound threshold in Kcontrol under Sound System from 60 seconds to 5 seconds or disabling entirely as a normal user.

This worked for me in Slackware 10 and 10.1

I've disabled artsd because it would make every multimedia player, music or video fail on my system. Disabling it altogether has made everything except firefox flash work.

Dear all,

Try using another window manager to use flash sound or try turning on artsd and typing artsdsp <name of program> (eg artsdsp xmms, artsdsp firefox) etc

using 'artsdsp firefox' didn't help either.

I'm taking kind of a stab in the dark here, but perhaps it's a preferences thing. If you go into the root's directory and show hidden files, maybe one of the folders there might have some sound prefs you could copy over to the user's directory?

I know I have, and it just frustrates me further.

I'm running Ubuntu 5.10, Firefox 1.07 and can only get sound from Flash when running Firefox as root.

you obviously didn't search _this_ forum... this is the slackware forum in case you haven't noticed... if you perform a search of the slackware forum for "flash sound" you will get plenty of relevant results...

i'm not exactly sure what the point of your post is either way... are you just venting here?? trying to be funny perhaps?? IMHO your ubuntu-flavored flamebait might be better-suited somewhere else...

If you use alsa, try temporarily change to aoss and then issue aoss firefox.

that is what I do and that fixed my problem, I have a forum with the same questions just search for it

Does your card support hardware mixing?

I had problems with Flash on FF on some sites. They magically disappeared after upgrading my SB16 to an Audigy 4

I know that's not much of a solution, but I tried everything, even emailed google (it was mainly google video that was broken)

All these problems were resolved because Audigy supports hardware mixing when my SB could not and only played one sound at a time, and even software mixing was failing for Flash

Well, I was simply following your suggestion. You said nothing about constraining to a forum. I clicked the most prominent "search" link on the page, which searched the whole forums area, apparently (despite the fact that I used "ubuntu" as the first search term, both on the site search, and using Google).

My point, if it has to be pigeonholed, is to share my results with the forum, and collect as many proposed solutions as possible in one place, if others want to systematically try them. This was the only thread I was able to find on the site that included the "works as root" symptom. I had no idea there was such a schism betweem the distro forums.

Funny? I don't know, are you trying to be helpful?
