firewire harddisk not mountable
 
I'im using a Slackware 10.1 with a self-compiled kernel v2.6.14. Now I tried to install a firewire hd.

If I got it switched on while booting, it is recognized and mountable at /dev/sdax. But if I switch it on when the system is already up, it is recognized, the devices /dev/sdbx appear, but when I try to mount it, there is no reaction for a long time, since eroor messages appear. I installed the newest libraw v1.2.1 in hope it could help but it didnt't. ^^

So is something wrong wih my hotplug/udev system? Didn't change them when I installed the new kernel. The same hd is also usable by USB, just tried to get it work on firewire for speed increases, over USB it is working fine ... is it faster over firewire?

Firewire is faster.

What filesystem are you using? Have you tried checking the filesystem with the proper utilities?

There are two partitions on the disk, sdb1 for windows, NTFS, 200gb and sdb2 for linux, reiserfs, 50gb. Now I saved all data and re-formatted it with reiser but it is still the same. I got a few new lines of dmesg output:

Over USB everything is fine, he tries to moiunt it over frewire, so is there just something wrong with my hardware? :scratch:

By the way, how do I use these proper utilities? ^^

Granth, are you referring to /proc the virtual filesystem in Linux?

I got it, now it works, and there is really just something wrong with my hardware. I borrowed a firewire pci-card from a friend, and over this card the disk is mountable and working without any problems...

Dont know whether I will buy an own firewire crad ... maybe ill just use it over usb

I had other problems wit hmy mainboard before, when I enable ACPI my mouse and keyboard dont work anymore ... I can't change the volume of my onboard sound card, the sound intensity is a constant value :confused:

So my slackware is fine, thanks for your try to help :^)
