it would be great if you could leave the problem you had and post what you did to fix it... this way it might prove useful to someone else... having a thread that reads "deleted" is kinda pointless...

I tried to del the thread but it doesn't seem to be possible (despite what the help says).

The problem was that I was unable to get a firewall activated - I was getting strange errors. I'd rolled my own (compiled) kernel 2.6.16.13 but was getting errors about ip_tables stuff that was missing ... only thing was that I couldn't find any of the stuff missing in "make menuconfig" (why no search facility??).

Anyway, it struck me after posting that all I really needed to do was fix the kernel compilation and the rest should drop in ... it did, I'm not sure how my approach altered, I did use "make xconfig".

So, I deleted it all as I didn't see it actually being useful as I was barking up the wrong tree. I'll have a look for the error messages and repost them ...

cool... BTW, it's a good idea to recompile iptables after you upgrade your kernel...
