You should get a popup prompt for root password in this case.

here's a screenshot of the error.
The screen shot just indicates a failed download but doesn't give any clues.
Can you try starting firefox from a command prompt and see what messages (if any) might be displayed in the console when error occurs?
Also, not sure if this will help, but comparing my user groups here (users disk lp wheel floppy audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev scanner), see if adding yourself to disk and other groups makes a difference.

--- Resolved ---

Reinstalled -current from a different repository - this seems to have resolved the issue. While I did reinstall previously, it was from my same install media.

Note to self: Verify install media next time.

Thank you to the awesome Slackware community for helping!

I think your problems started here, by running X and thus Firefox (especially for its first run) as root. I done this (once) before on a new install, and found it caused me a whole lot of grief, and I ended up with similar issues to this.
Like this, for example:

I am experiencing this issue as well with the latest Firefox on Slackware64-current ... this is an existing install that was working fine until recently. As the OP noted, any download immediately is marked as failed.

Have you checked the permissions on your temp ('/tmp') directory? I think it shout be root:root and 1777...

well, i've just re-installed slackware64-current (Dec. 29. version), in virtualbox and firefox works fine with a brand new user as well.
I will mark up my previous experience to installing multilib and kde5 for now.

Still not sure what's wrong, but my /tmp permissions are correct.

Problem and solution are here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...x/+bug/1527884. I never run Firefox as root but I do have multiple users on my system, so this bug still affects me.

So others don't need to read that thread.
Linux: temporary download directory is not created specifically for each user
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1233434
The workaround is to set the permissions
Code:
chmod 0777 /tmp/mozilla_mozillaUser0
or
chmod 0770 /tmp/mozilla_mozillaUser0
