Firefox freezes and X crashes
HELP!!!
I am having a lot of freezes with Firefox and sometimes, X crashes and I end up back at the login screen. I used to use Slackware 10.0 and it was very stable. I moved to Zenwalk 2.8, then 3.0, then 4.0, and then 4.4. Through all of the Zenwalk versions, I had the same problem. I came back to Slackware 11.0 with the XFS.s kernel and I am still seeing the same crashes. In an attempt to troubleshoot, I ran memtest86+ for 7 hours without a problem. My linux harddrive checked out OK. I haven't installed the ATI 3D driver yet, so the X driver for ATI that came with Slackware 11.0 should be OK. I believe that the XFS.s kernel is a 2.4 series and most of the Zenwalk kernels have been the 2.6 series, so the kernel must not be the problem. I cannot find any logs that would tell me why Firefox is freezing and why X crashes. In a nutshell, I'm lost as to how to make my system more stable. Can someone point me in a direction to 'fix' my system? |
Do you also experience this behavior with a clean install and a new profile of Firefox (so without extensions/themes/flash player(!)/whatever)?

Hmm...
Thats weird. Are you running out of memory ? Try running command top and see whats going on. So is X crashing when you start firefox and firefox is freezing? I mean does X crash without starting firefox? I have a ati radeon 9200 and didn't have a problems with the X crashing.I use the ati driver from ati and it works fine so maybe you should try it. Oh and if you're going to try the driver from ati read this before installing. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=402003 Oh and I use the opera browser and it seems to be much lighter than firefox.Firefox is getting bloated for me. |

Opera is a great browser, but (a lot) less tweakable. And FF renders better (but that's a matter of taste). ;) I prefer Konqueror over Opera (a lot faster). |
Can you get any logs on why X crashes. Check '/var/log/Xorg.0.log'. FF usually crashes because of bad extensions or plug-ins. FF without any extensions or plug-ins is very stable and not at all bloated ... of course, less functional ... but hey, you gotta pick one. Best thing to do is install as few plug-ins and extensions as possible, and only ones that are known to be stable. What plug-ins and extensions do you have installed ?

adriv,
I don't know what to really say about which browser uses less memory, but opera for me starts within 1 sec and firefox 2.0 within a couple seconds and I didn't add any extensions. Plus another reason is that lately I couldn't find any good firefox themes.I can't find good dark themes. They're all looking kind of bloated and bad icon themes. But opera has so many good sleek and sexy themes. But hey, If you know of good dark firefox themes pass me the link! |

I use the standard, grey theme ... really minimal ... but usable, fast, visible, etc. For example: http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/3...eenshotys3.png |

I don't use any FF-themes, but I have a theme in KDE that's moderated to my taste, so all apps have the same look. Screenshot. There is a -dark- theme that I like a lot, but my wife doesn't, so we don't use that anymore. It's called RedHat Artwork. |
Okey I took some screenshots of a dark firefox theme and dark
opera theme. firefox http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5...eenshotpo5.png Opera http://img524.imageshack.us/my.php?i...yenshotjp4.png I don't know but to me the opera theme looks much slimmer and sleek than firefox. On the side yesterday I was changing the look of fluxbox... Here's some screenies. http://img131.imageshack.us/my.php?i...enshot2xx0.png Here's my aterm I modified it a little, now it looks much nicer. Oh and I found this kick-ass theme for audacious http://img50.imageshack.us/my.php?im...eenshotbk4.png I don't know what happened but I got firefox to use my gtk theme! So now don't know which browser to use! I'll just use both till I find which one I like. firefox http://img509.imageshack.us/my.php?i...eenshotnr6.png |
I actually like the look of the firefox one much better than the opera one you posted ... matter of taste, as usual.
