Try going to Edit -> Preferences -> Downloads tab -> View & Edit Actions button and see if .txt is associated with something different now.

I also have this problem with Firefox. I'm hoping the problem will go away after I install Slackware 11.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Is this from all servers or only some? It's possible the server is sending a Content-Type other than "text/plain", which would make firefox think the file is something else.

I think it's from everywhere. Any file I try to open that has a .txt extension pops up a box asking whether I want to open it with gedit, or download it. This applies also to any files on my local computer. If I want to open /home/.../somefile.txt with Firefox, I have to rename it, changing the extension on the file, and then Firefox displays it correctly.

Of course reinstalling wouldn't help, all the local prefs are stored in the home directory after all.
Maybe there is a mime type messed up somewhere. I'd try backing up the firefox setting folder(s), and restarting firefox with a fresh profile. If the problem is still there, it's likely not just firefox that's experiencing it.
