port 22 is ssh if you want someone to help some. Would gladly do it, we would meet in an pub irc channel switch to a private, give root pass, ssh in as root and do the configuring.... then you change root passwd. As we are doing it we can discuss what is going on. Do you have another box to talk on irc why this is going on?

If not no prob.

I am not real sure I understand "Typed root and ... there and back again! Nothing is configured and you have to do it yourself manually." what is meant by there and back again?

Have you tried typing 'startx' after you log in??? The nvidia card should run OK in the vesa frame buffer mode that XF86Config is setup as default...

As far as your nvidia driver. you gotta download it from nvidia.com. and follow the instructions in the README at the site. Are you able to get it??? Here is the link:

http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...-4496-pkg2.run

Once you grab it, then run sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run from the command line. Follow the directions, then edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and change the Driver 'vesafb" to read
Driver "nvidia"
save it. and then startx.

To get graphical mode at log on, edit /etc/inittab so that these lines read 4 instead of 3:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:

run netconfig as root or if that doesn't work look in /etc/rc.modules for your nick cards and the appropriate driver.... and uncomment the correct one. Though hotplug should be detecting them already.... hmm 2 nics huh.... look at /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf.

As far as your other questions. Yes the kernel can be recompiled. Follow the sticky directions in this forum or in the README in your /usr/src/2.4.22 directory. I believe if it booted then your nforce2 chipset is supported....

hmm ALSA sound. As root run alsamixer from a terminal, set your settings, then run alsactl store. Sound ***SHOULD*** work after that. What kinda soundcard is onboard that Motherboard??? or am I to look that up

No to anti-virus
I use gshield for my firewall ruleset. You can find it via google.
