Filesystem other than vfat on memory card?

I am trying to run a system whereby I keep all my work on a camera sd card that I can stick into whichever computer I want to use. It goes into a usb adapter or a pcmcia adapter. This works fine except that the file system is vfat and this seems to cause me all sorts of problems - I cannot make symlinks on it, I have to have either everything executable or nothing executable. Does the filesystem have to be vfat and if not can I just mkfs whatever I want? If I can do this will it cause me problems in other ways? Anyone know? I take it that if I want to use it on a windows box it would need to be vfat.

Hi.

You should be able to format the card with whatever filesystem you like. The card won't be usable on Windows unless the you use vfat of NTFS though.
