FGLRX - 2.6.20 - Dual Monitors? Big Desktop?


Haha and I wrote a guide on enabling 3d acceleration with older ATI cards why can't I figure this out --


I have two viewsonic monitors, ones an A90 and the other is an A90F+. The monitors do the same resolution (1600x1200). I am currently using the newest ati drivers. Kernel version is 2.6.20 compiled by me. I have 3d acceleration working as the output of glxgears is:

What I want to do is have one big desktop across both monitors. Currently I think it's in dual-head mode(Anyone clarify)?. The other problem is my second monitor runs at like 1024x768 while my first monitor runs at 1600x1200. Anyone help me out?

I set up BigDesktop (after a lot of pain) at work, using this guide:

There is an awesome config file there that you can use to explore the different options.

There are a few things to be aware of:

1. BigDesktop is ATi specific and allows 3d acceleration on *both* monitors, and both are connected.
2. You can do some stuff using the VESA driver and the radeon driver, but ...
3. Total res is limited, however, to 1024*768,1024*768 (i don't recall which setup this is true for)
4. BigDesktop did not work with some drivers. I kept upgrading and downgrading until I had a working output. Until that time I used straight-up dual monitors, which was a bit of a nuisance but not impossible to work with.

ATi is definitly improving their standing in my eyes, their X-config generator is very smooth and produces working output if the driver is up to it, but as always with drivers: YMMV.

Biggest thing to investigate is the max resolution on those monitors in a dual-screen setup.

Wish I could offer more helpful advice.

Yeah I followed that guide and I still can't get it. The one monitor will do 1600x1200 but the second one will not I wanna try to get a combined resolution of 3200x2400. I did notice in the xorg logs that MonitorLayout is no longer supported.

I'm looking at my xorg.conf (see below) now, which is slack stock plus the ATi alterations as generated by aticonfig, something like this:

# aticonfig --dtop=horizontal --overlay-on=1 --screen-layout=right

My nVidia configs look like what you have posted previously but ATi seems to prefer the use of serverlayout to control the output - i suggest tweaking the screen sections and starting at something like 800x600,800x600 and go up incrementally.

I still haven't been able to get them to work. I honestly am not sure how you were able to achieve this because of the current state of the driver and kernel 2.6.20 here:

unless you have applied a patch?
