few questions afer kernel install

so after a few hours of playing around i was able to upgrade my kernel from 2.4 to 2.6.5. learned a lot and im one stop closer to making my slackware switch. atm i got slackwareset up in a 5 gig partition here is my disk layout:

hda
hda1 =windows
hda2 =slackware
hdb
hdb1= mandrake swap (also use this swap for slackware)
hdb2= / mandrake
hdb3= /home mandrake
hdb4= /backups

i had slackware lilo installed in MBR but i overwrote it with mandrake lilo
my problem after i did this was getting the following error

Kernel panic: no init found try passing init option to kernel
here is my lilo.config from mandrake:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
default="linux"
keytable=/boot/us.klt
prompt
nowarn
timeout=9990
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux"
root=/dev/hdb2
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="devfs=mount acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb1 splash=silent"
vga=788
read-only
#mandrake
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux-nonfb"
root=/dev/hdb2
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="devfs=mount acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb1"
read-only
#mandrake nonfb
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="failsafe"
root=/dev/hdb2
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb1 devfs=nomount"
read-only
#mandrake failsafe
other=/dev/hda1
label="windows"
table=/dev/hda
#winblows
other=/dev/fd0
label="floppy"
unsafe
#floppy
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="slackware"
root=/dev/hda2
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
read-only
#slackware

what am i doing wrong i tought by adding the line initrd=/boot/initrd.img it would fix it but no luck.

now after i did the 2.6.5 compiled and booted into slackware i noticed 2 things i had no internet and no sound. the sound problem i think i knwo the reason when i was doing make oldconfig and it asked me for oss ar alsa support i repply with no. do i recomply the kernel to add the oss /alsa support? what about my nic ? also if recompile the kernel to turn on alsa and enable my nic do i have to recopy the .config file from my 2.4 kenerl over to the 2.6 one ?

here is the info from mandrake on what drivers it was using.

vendor = daviacom
module = tupil

this is info on sound card

sound blaster 16 pci
vendor ensoniq
alt driver snd-ens1371
module es1371

i used da one instruction to install the kernel some other questions:

when ever i do make oldconfig and i start getting asked questions do i just reply to the default ?
ex it would ask a question then tell me (N,y,?) for these i would reply to the cap letter N

thanks very much in advace

For one you should use make menuconfig. Number 2 I suggest that you use the slackware lilo as its easier to configurate then the mandrake one at least i think it is.
