Faulty xorg.conf caused X to disappear!
 

I wasn't able to change the resolution in X so finally i tried the xorg.conf-vesa template file. It booted X, but during Gnome loading the screen suddenly added a couple of distorted lines over the Gnome logo, froze completely and there was nothing to do but turning the machine off.

Now, X is gone. Yes - startx gives "no such command". The X11 folder is RED when ls:ing the /usr dir and cd X11 gives "input/output error". ... this ... this can't be?

If this is a hardware error, why did only one single folder disappear - and the X11 of all possible! The installation seems intact in all other ways.

The computer is a 200mhz 64mb ram 4gb hd and some 1mb gfx card (quite a relic, but fully working). I'm running Slackware 10.

Try ro remove the whole X package with pkgtool and then reinstall X

Gnome with 64 MB RAM and 1 MB Grafik ?
I do not believe that this will ever work...

hmm, I think your right, if you get x back i would try a window manager instead of a desktop inviroment.

A couple of posts ago I described the PC in question as "fully working". I must revise this statement...

Removing the X packages worked once, X reappeared but it had trouble finding all libraries. I tried removing the packages again which caused another complete freeze.

Probably the blazing fast EDO ram or the huge 4gb disk has some faults. Or was it the missing CPU fan? The machine was built from scrap parts in my basement and I am now abandoning the project. Instead, my XP1800+ will get the treatment, perhaps a little Zipslack first to try out the compability.
