do slackware 9.1 come with xfce4?

I don't understand what you mean by 'fast'. But I don't think Slackware + Xfce4 is any 'faster' than Slackware + Xfce3 or BlackBox or TWM or Fluxbox , let alone Gentoo+[insert random non-gnome non-kde]

Having said that, XFCE4 is surely more lightweight than GNOME or KDE. However it lacks many features / eye candy that those environments have.

its nice, but i don't like the way that the rat is in the center of the screen and at each corner of each window, but if u say that its faster than gdm then maybe i will try it out!

"faster and good looking" The most compensating desktop. Just try it and u will understand.

What file manager does xfce use? It looks quite similar to gnome. I thought I might give it a go if I can get slackware installed.

Not yet as usable as nautilus. but it works. Until new release of xfce which promises a better file manager u can stick with nautilus!

Ok,sridharinfinity which files do i download inorder to get this working?? i already installed the libs that are there. Im guessing that when it says exectuting install script that means its installed and when it doesnt say that something went wrong. Ok also how do i know which version of xfce do i have?? I think i have 3 but im not sure and when i install 4 do i do upgradepkg or just installpkg thats what i did so far. Thanx

not quite sure abt that (also i am a slackware newbie). I have successfully installed the rh9-rpms in slackware 9.0 by giving this command
<extract>
bash$ cd xfce4/rpm
bash$ ls . | xargs -n 1 rpm -ivh --nodeps

after that just use this
bash$ startxfce4 (in virtual terminal, not xterm, with no X running)

rh9 rpms can be found at

oh Ok sorry about that, sridharinfinity. Does anyone know which slackware packs i need to download and which order i need to install them???? sridharinfinity the last time i used rh8 packs i messed up my system i rather use the slack packs thanx anyways. Thanx for u reply

I hope that you are suggesting this primarily for slower computers...because, PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, but a 2GHz+ processor with a fair amount of cache and ram should be able to run KDE and Blackbox with minimal losses of speed and such while using KDE, right?
I'm a newb and I started with gnome and I hated it. It felt as though I had less control then in windows at first(I couldn't even put the toolbar on the bottom)
I'm really just curious since I will continue to use KDE on my fast machines while anything else(depending on the destro, but I trypically just choose a random non kde or gnome one, blackbox if it's there :)) on the slow machines my friends keep asking me to set up(cause I think it's fun).

I actually have compiled all XFCE4 release candidates and the release, and tried each of them.

That being said, I wouldn't switch from Dropline GNOME to anything ;) The lack of a proper session manager , not being able to put the window list to anywhere but the top, not being able to use desktop icons (without external programs) and its file manager which lacks a lot when compared to counterparts such as Nautilus and Konqueror are the main reasons why I am not using XFCE4.

However, for lower end systems, XFCE4 is a solid, fast and nice looking (thanks to GTK2) desktop environment.

I've been using Xfce4 for about three weeks now, and I'm just about sick of it. In terms of configurability, I may as well be using windows.

While I like the panel, the only way to set it up is through the gui, and if the developers haven't thought of something you want to do, then forget it.

The desktop is even worse, unless you just want a simple image for a background. Personally I got rather used to running root-tail so the message logs would scroll across my desktop behind whatever windows I had open. But apparently, that can't be done with the xfce desktop module. Just for 5#!7S and giggles, I tried running Xplanet. Never saw it 'til I was shutting down the Xserver, when I discovered that it had been running BEHIND the desktop.

If you really want to get depressed about the whole project, go to their website and read the forum about Feature Requests. The response to most of the suggestions usually runs something like this: 'That's a silly/useless/unworkable suggestion. If you want that feature, use Gnome/KDE'

It's pretty sad when a developer doesn't take feedback from his users seriously, especially after setting up a forum just to collect that feedback. The best thing I can say about the developers of Xfce, is that at least they're not as beligerent as those of mplayer.

Sorry about the rant, but then again, I guess this post is only here for people to say if they do/don't like xfce. I'm in the latter category ;-)

In fact, unless someone here knows how I can get root-tail to work with the xfce desktop (no one on their forum knew) then it's back to Fluxbox for me.

If you think Slackware is fast - then try Vector 3.2 or 4 - the Windows open before you've even clicked the mouse............

I've been trying XFce4 for few days and I must say that Gnome is better for me, but i would like to have XFce panel in Gnome. I find it more useable then any other panel in Gnome/KDE/Windows.

Yes, Skyline is right and XFce works fine and fast with the above OS. Wonder how to install XFce with my current Slackware 9.1. At this moment, I am running VL just for a try.
