failed to open div directory Input/output error ?

Hello,

i am using Slackware 14.1 64bit when i tried to open /dev i getting the following error
Quote:
Failed to open directory "dev". Error when getting information for file '/dev/sda5': Input/output error.
it is fresh installation after completing installation i tried to open /dev for accessing my NTFS drives then i am getting the above error.i searched over Google about this i found little bit information i.e this error indicates the bad filesystem how to recover from this error and how to access my external drives.is there any another way to access my external drives ? please guide me.

Without having the commands you used, I'm think you're trying to open the device directly, which you can't do. You need to mount it to a folder to use it. If it is ntfs, as root, run the following:

Code:
mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda5 /mnt/hd
Then, you should be able to navigate to /mnt/hd/ to view your files.

Thanks for the reply,i tried as u suggested as root the following output i am getting
Quote:
mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda5 /mnt/hd
ntfs-3g: Failed to access volume '/dev/sda5': Input/output error

ntfs-3g 2013.1.13 integrated FUSE 27 - Third Generation NTFS Driver
Configuration type 1, XATTRS are on, POSIX ACLS are off

Usage: ntfs-3g [-o option[,...]] <device|image_file> <mount_point>

Options: ro (read-only mount), windows_names, uid=, gid=,
umask=, fmask=, dmask=, streams_interface=.
Please see the details in the manual (type: man ntfs-3g).

Example: ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/windows
i have a small doubt i.e there is no folder at /dev and it is unable to open then how can we mount folders in it to the /mnt?

Cool problem solved

Yesterday when i installing Slackware there is an option called
Quote:
adding fat or NTFS filesystem or continue with the setup
i select adding fat or NTFS option and added my NTFS drives after completed setup there is no NTFS drives when i try to mount i getting the error.now i just Reinstall Slackware 14.1 64bit(Fresh installation) and i am not selecting adding fat or NTFS
Quote:
i just select skip and continue with the setup
after setup completed now my drives are automatically mounted no need to mount now everything is fine .
