Yes, modprobe works as expected in 2.4. If you do a ifconfig everything looks OK (except that the RX/TX counters are 0).
lsmod shows the driver loaded and in use.
I tried the tg3 driver which comes with 2.4.32 and I also tried the bcm5700-8.3.14.tar.gz package (ie, patch the kernel source and enable bcm5700 driver) from broadcom.
For each, modprobe works ok, and also compiling the driver into the kernel yields the same result - no traffic over eth0.
I think at one point the TX counter for eth0 went up, but RX remained 0.
