eth0 auto starts

Dears,

How can I disable auto start of my et0 interface?
I tried ifconfig eth0 down, which brings it down for few seconds and then it automatically goes up again

Cheers,
J

It depends which tool you use. If that's NetworkManager, run as regular user "nm-applet", then right-click on the widget in the tray, choose "Edit Connections..." in the menu and set the wired connection so that to automatic connection be disabled.

If you use another tool, please tell us which one.

If you are just using Slackware's rc scripts, you want to find the file /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and change the line in it that says

USE_DHCP[0]="yes"

to

USE_DHCP[0]="no"

You can still configure the interface via dhcp adhoc by calling

/sbin/dhcpcd eth0

as root anytime you need. You might also consider setting up your /etc/sudoers to allow a group like wheel or netdev to call /sbin/dhcpcd and /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 as well as making your account a member of one of those groups; If this is a workstation or portable anyway. Gives you almost as much flexibility as network manager.
