Unhappy /etc/profile (need help re-generating)

I inherited a working Linux, Slackware 2.2.16.
I have totally trashed the /etc/profile (by cat'ing from a file to a linked file--didn't know better, involving profile).

How can I generate what is needed, figure out what is needed to replace the /etc/profile?

I'm new to Linux and didn't set this machine up.

2.2.16 is a kernel version, not a Slackware version.

You are therefore probably running Slackware 7.1, this 7.1 etc package should contain a copy of /etc/profile that you can use (either reinstall that package, or extract the file from it).
