i write bzip2 -dc patch-2.6.3.bz2 | patch -p1

get a whole lot of obviously successful output then this

can't find file to patch at input line 8322
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:
--------------------------
|diff -Nru a/arch/ia64/configs/generic_defconfig b/arch/ia64/configs/generic_defconfig
|--- a/arch/ia64/configs/generic_defconfig Tue Feb 17 20:00:06 2004
|+++ b/arch/ia64/configs/generic_defconfig Tue Feb 17 20:00:06 2004

basically you cannot upgrade your 2.6.1 kernel to 2.6.3 by patching the patch 2.6.3 files. you need to patch 2.6.2.patch first before patching patch-2.6.3.

to patch , insided your /usr.src/linux

patch -Np1 -i patch-2.6.2

and so on...

duh i should have tried that first i guess...

now i have another problem, i successfully patched the kernel up to 2.6.3,
compiled it the same way as i did to get 2.6.1 working, rebooted
but it still comes up saying welcome to 2.6.1?

any way i can check if thats what really is running?

try cat /proc/version...

in my opinion you are still running on 2.6.1 kernel....did you recompile the kernel after successfully patching the 2.6.2 & 2.6.3...if not you can follow DaOne kernel compling guide...http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...7095&highlight
