Kernel compile Error launching vmware

Hi,

I have successfully installed vmware gsx 2.5.1 on Slackware 9.1 by following the instructions on this page (cant post urls yet) (www).cs.ucr.edu/~jbyrne/vmware(.htm)

When I run "vmware start" it says that it has not been correctly configured for my kernel and to run vmware-config.pl, which I have already done as per jbyrne's instructions. Any ideas on what is going wrong ?

(edited post to make problem more clear)

GW

A search function is a terrible thing to waste!

Enjoy!

Nope that is not it.

I am running the standard 2.4.22 kernel not any flavour of 2.6.X.

That post did not indicate in any way that this is the fix for my problem with kernel compilation error when launching vmware.

I did use the search and read every post that looked promising but none had any info on my problem.

On VMware's site none of the supported distributions fo Linux are using a kernel greater that 2.4.20. It may just be a general problem with the 2.4.22 kernel.

I have read the readme in the patch and it does not mention any of the problems that I am experiencing. I will install the patch anyway just in case it may help...

Personally I wouldn't install that patch, since it's for vmware workstation afaik. I had missed the bit where you said you were using gsx, I have only ever used the workstation product (which works fine on both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels) so I'm afraid I can't help you with it. If you actually paid for it ;-) then it might be worth contacting vmware support.

Also I would assume that the guide you used is talking about the workstation product rather than gsx.

Yeah you are right, all the guides are for the workstation product.

I have an evaluation license from vmware as I am testing the product for my work (really). It may be better than running it on Server 2003 and it will save me a 2003 license.

I will soon have a copy of ESX to play with, which may be better than installing it onto a host OS but I have no price for the ESX product yet. It may cost too much, then I will be back to whether to use Linux or 2003...

I really wanted to use slackware as it is less bloated than redhat, suse or mandrake.

I will try one of the "supported" distributions and see if this works OK.

Thanks for your time
