Error initializing sound driver

I installed Slackware 12 on a new hard drive.
I get this message when I start KDE:
Quote:
Error while initializing sound driver.
Device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such file or directory).
The sound driver will continue using the null output device.
I also get this when I run alsamixer:
Quote:
root@Slackware:~# alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
When I had Slackware 12 installed on my other hard drive I didn't have this problem.

Thanks for help.

try the "alsaconf" command to properly setup the sound card. Then I think you need to restart KDE.

PS:
You'll need to run it as root
