Error after compile 3.4.4 Kernel
Good night Folks.
I am newbie in Linux, I using more or less 4 months Slackware. I've learned something trying to get this system to my own taste. I decided to compile the kernel 3.4.4, to learn and to see whether it is more easy to set the network, memory and video devices in a more modern computer that I'm hoping to get in thursday. So I am practicing in the old one. The question is, after compile, configure the kernel, make the modules, changes in /boot and update lilo, comes the reboot, everything runs fine until at one point just before the up the network card, the screen changes to a higher resolution and freezes stoping the load process. I think it's something with the video settings because when I installed Slack on the 1st try, and put the resolution higher than 600x480 to text mode, I had the same trouble. Is that so? My lilo is configured to vga = normal, and the same happens in any other resolution. But anyway I'm guessing. It would be some setting in the kernel? thank you Alchemikos |
You could be experiencing a modesetting issue with the kernel driver for your video card.
There is an option for the kernel to disable modesetting upon boot. Research it and try and see if it clears up your problem. Also, please post your system specs as well. |

I'll looking for the modesetting
Thanks for now Alchemikos |
If you can edit your lilo.conf, include the following append statement in the section for that kernel image:
Code:
append="video=640x480" |
As you enter LILO, hit Tab to get a LILO command line. Then boot Linux with the 'nomodeset' option to prevent kernel mode-setting on all video drivers. You should be able to get back to a 80x24 terminal login, from there you can further investigate.

Hello
I tried first the lilo methods and the problem persists. To disable the mode setting, must I disable the viafb module ? Cause that's my card... Googling i found just about disable i915. |
Hell Yeah!
The trouble was fixed!
I started from the beginning again all the procedure, in the make menuconfig I unchecked every module in the frame buffer section, and the DLM at File System section (other error). Now I running 3.4.4 kernel in my pretty Slack, all is working fine. Thank you all guys! Meeting the answers together! Now I'll looking for the XFCE 4.10 :) Alchemikos |
