erratic mouse behavior

using slackware 10.0 with 2.6.7 kernel on my Toshiba laptop and everything seems to be working ok except for my optical usb mouse, the touchpad works. When i have the mouse plugged in its behavior is erattic to say the least any movement sends the cursor flying round the screen randomly and clicking all the time. my current xorg.conf looks like this

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "Auto"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

I'm using a Microsoft optical notebook mouse.

any help would be nice.

Tow things, and they are probably crazy, but I had problems with erratic mouse behaviour before and this fixed it.

1)
Code:
chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm
That might not apply to you, so don't worry if you get an error message. Just move on.

2) Change
Code:
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
to
Code:
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
This worked great for me. I don't remember where I saw it, but I don't see many people suggest it. Try it out and let me know.

That's funny. I should really slow down when I read the posts. Good call, Zcat.

I thought I read somewhere that the X config files are case-insensitive, so changing that M to lowercase shouldn't do anything. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong...

i've tried everything that's been suggested, and I am restarting X every time. There was probably the Protocol "auto" line because I've been trying different options in there..

It also works in the default 2.4 kernel, but not in my new 2.6.7 one; might I have missed something out? the touchpad works in 2.6 but not 2.4, so it might be a conflict? I'm not sure how to find out if these are the case.

Right well nothing suggested did the trick so in the end i went to 2.6.8 and the mouse and the touch pad work fine together, so its all good. Now i just need to get the network card up.
