Question er, what are disk 3+4 for?


well, what are they?
install only used 1+2

In short, you build cds 1 & 2 from the cds 3 & 4. (they contain source code)

Yeh, just to expand on the above, disk 3 and disk 4 are useless for most users since they only contain source code. You can compile software from these if you really wanted, but you could just use the slackware packages on disk 1 and disk 2.

However, I believe the third and fourth disk are there due to the GPL which requires source to be distributed with binaries - correct me if I'm wrong :)

Pretty much. Strictly speaking, you have to ensure that those to whom you distribute binaries are able to get at the source. Including extra disks with the source on is a good way of doing this.

Isn't ZipSlack on one of the source disks, too?

You just might like to recompile a package for your target cpu, some packages mmay perform better with i686 instructions.
