English fonts for Linux/Slackware/KolourPaint
Good Afternoon....
I am having one hell of a time figuring out how to find Help on changing the 'fonts' that are presented as defaults by one of the 'draw' programs called KolourPaint in KDE/XWindow on a Slackware 14.2 build on top of a Linux 4.4.2 There are Arabic (Newspaper), Oriental languages, and precious very few of the English ones I have been using since 1997. Arial, Segoe, Courrier... If there is a 'font' option in the Slackware Install, then maybe that is the place I should look first ....seems I remember one but, I thought I chose it. Maybe I need to go back and un-choose it. If I do this, will Slackware rewrite itself to my HDD as a whole or will it just add the fonts and be done with it? 'Thank You' for your help~~~! David |
Hi:
I launched Kolour Paint and looked every where. Sadly I didn't see a way to change the fonts within the program itself. AFAIk you can change the fonts in the KDE Settings. However that will only change the fonts for your Slackware system. Unless I am mistaken I don't think it will change the fonts for Kolour Paint. Quote:
Give your thread a little more time. Other members may know a way around this. Sorry, I don't:- The Handbook for Kolour Paint is in PDF form in this Google search if you need it. https://www.google.com/search?q=how+...utf-8&oe=utf-8 -:::-I just changed my fonts in XFCE and it changed the font in Kolour Paint. HTH-:::- |
The font option in the Slackware installer is just for the terminal IIRC, it won't affect X or kolourpaint.
And kolourpaint's font menu does not seem to think in terms of defaults, it just offers all the fonts it recognizes as installed on the system. If you have no use for Arabic fonts, I believe you can just use Code:
slackpkg remove font-arabic Code:
slackpkg remove font-misc-ethiopic Possibly of interest if you want Arial back: http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slac...nts-installer/ |

Thanks for the reply :) Unfortunately I punted my Open Office installation, I Hope that is what you mean by "XFCE". Very helpful to know I can run the Install from DVD again and have it just add(+) or subtract(-) features listed on that one page of the Install, if I remember correctly. This will be my next Linux/PC related 'projects' when I have the precious time. And I will, continue to monitor this thread for more replies in case their is an easier alternative. Thanks, David |

No, that's not what I mean. XFCE is a desktop environment. As is your KDE.:) As I said before; when I went into my XFCE settings and changed my font it changed it for Kolour Paint as well. When you have the time you can change your font in your KDE Settings and it should change it for Kolour Paint too. |

my search on fonts 'slackpkg search fonts' issued the following results: [ installed ] - ghostscript-fonts-std-8.11-noarch-1 [ installed ] - dejavu-fonts-ttf-2.34-noarch-1 [ installed ] - fontsproto-2.1.3-noarch-1 [ installed ] - fslsfonts-1.0.5-i586-2 [ installed ] - liberation-fonts-ttf-1.07.4-noarch-1 [ installed ] - mkfontscale-1.1.2-i586-2 [ installed ] - sazanami-fonts-ttf-20040629-noarch-1 [ installed ] - ttf-indic-fonts-0.5.14-noarch-1 [ installed ] - xfontsel-1.0.5-i586-2 [ installed ] - xlsfonts-1.0.5-i586-1 do you have any idea what I should do to further hunt rabbits ie.- fonts that are not English type fonts? your two suggestions slackpkg remove syriac-font slackpkg remove ethiopic-fonts (from memory) did not yield the results I had hoped for. at this point I am hoping you have a suggestion of which of the above installed packages I need to look in to find the rabbit poo fonts .... or could I just write them down on a scrap piece of paper from the drop-down box in KolourPaint (the ones I don't wish to have) and come back to Terminal and try the 'remove' command with each separate font that I wrote down? will this work? thanks, david |
Did you change your fonts in KDE?
That should change the font in Kolour Paint:- |

But ls /var/log/packages/*font*noarch* or indeed slackpkg search font (singular) will help locate most if not all fonts you have installed. The file PACKAGES.TXT on any slackware mirror (or pkgtool, but that is probably less easy to navigate) will clarify if they contain only, or mainly, fonts for scripts not based on Latin. mkfontscale, xfontsel etc. are not fonts but software, best not remove those - you will not find them with the ls command (because of the noarch). sazanami for example can safely go yes. |
