Emu10k1 surround questions.

I use linux to play alot of games. Especially now that winex is getting support for newer games (ie: Max Payne 2, etc.). Anyway, I'm using the default emu10k1 driver that comes w/ slack 9.1 for my SB Audigy card. If I turn on multi-channel mode in Max Payne 2, or any other game, nothing comes out of the rear speakers and the front speakers are all garbled and messed up sounding. If I put it back in 2 channel mode, the 2 front speakers work perfectly. My question is this. How do I completely disable the built in emu10k1 driver that comes w/ the kernel so that I can install the latest driver and emu-tools from sourceforge? I'm thinking that maybe slack just isn't up to date on it's emu10k1 driver, and I just need to get the latest version. I just want to completely disable the old version so that I won't have version issues w/ the two drivers conflicting. Has anyone else done this w/ success? Did you have to disable/remove the stock slack drivers, or did the new ones install over them just fine?

You've got the correct module for your card. But, to remove the module, type (as root):

rmmod <modulename>

You said you want to install the newest version of emu10k1? If the module is not named the same as the former emu10k1, then you should just be able to do a modprobe <modulename>, but if it's the same, then you might want to remove all instances of the old module.

One quick question though before you go through all this stuff--what are you using for sound? If you're using ALSA, did you configure it to your needs? There are surround channels that probably need to be unmuted and volumes turned up. If you're using ALSA, try as root:

alsaconf

Now type:

alsamixer

Use M to mute/unmute and arrow keys to adjust levels and move between the channels. When you've got what you want, hit Esc and you'll be brought back to command line. Now type:

alsactl store

to save your settings. Hopefully this is all you need to do instead of removing and reinstalling various modules.
