elvis problems with nfs-mounts

I have all my stuff on a nfs-mounted disk (server running slackware of course). Sometimes, when I get sufficiently deep into the hierarchy (3-4 levels from the top), I use elvis to make a new file. When I try to open the same file again - elvis complains about 'bad path'. All the usual utilities works fine, I can 'cat', 'ls' whatever - even open it with 'vim' works fine - but 'elvis' - nope.

Has anyone ever come across this?

[edit]
I have the same problem even when I 'cd' to the directory and try to use elvis on the filename alone.

Maybe try verbose mode (elvis -VVV), see if some output can help
